Why Use It?

It is a well-known fact that repetitive page content can distract a reader. The purpose of using Lorem Ipsum is to improve readability, by providing a more even distribution of letters, rather than using constantly typing 'text goes here, text goes here'. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default generic text. Also, a search for the keyword 'lorem ipsum' in search engines will bring up many sites still in the design phase. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour, for example).

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has its roots in classical Latin literature since 45 BC. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorm Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil), written by Cicero in 45 BC. It was a treatise on moral theory and was very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of the Lorem Ipsum passage, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard Lorem Ipsum texts used since the 1500s have been reproduced for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, written by Cicero, are also reproduced from the original form, accompanied by English versions taken from the 1914 H. Rackham translation.

Where Can I Find It?

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum, but the majority have suffered alteration, injected humour, or randomised words.
